Dancers at the Dance Education Laboratory Summer Institute 2019

Are you a Dance Major interested in Dance Education?

Letters of intent for the 2020 Dance Education Laboratory Summer Institute will be accepted through February 3, 2020.

Each year, there is an opportunity for the Performing Arts Department at Washington University in St. Louis Dance program to send one student to the Dance Education Laboratory (DEL) Summer Institute, a four-week intensive experience focused on dance education.  “DEL is a safe place for new and experienced dance teachers to enhance their skills, develop sequential curriculum, and learn from one another. For over twenty years, DEL has been training and supporting the work of dance educators, equipping the teachers of today with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom.” (DEL Website)

Here is what some of our DEL Alums have to say about the program:

Emily Duggins (LA '18)
“At DEL, I was able to spend a summer deeply delving into teaching dance to kids in public schools. Throughout the summer I studied lesson plan structures, dance notation tools, specific approaches for working with students of different age groups, and ways to incorporate academic work into the lesson.”
“The most important take-away was certainly to allow myself to learn from the students: pay attention to what they really need and work to give that, rather than giving what you think they probably need. And be a student. Always.”

Gabrielle Samuel (Senior, Dance Major)
“[The] Laban Movement Analysis and Language of Dance [classes] helped me identify all the facets of movement I neglect.”

“The Early Child Adult Education course has equipped me with the tools I need to teach young children.”
