To the Lighthouse

This production was available on-demand, May 7-9, 2021.

During the weekend of May 7- 9, 2021 The PAD Virtual Platorm presented To the Lighthouse by Datouma.  This Chinese-language play in translation was the winner of the World Sinophone Drama Competition for Young Playwrights in 2019.  It featured 7 students and 4 faculty members (among others) in an animated staged reading. It was a perfect way to celebrate Asian American History during May.

On August 23, 2017, Typhoon Hato hit Macau, Hong Kong, and Zhuhai.  It was the first Category 10 storm in Hong Kong since 2012, and in Macau since 1999.  The Macau Weather Bureau was slow to sound the alarm, and the territory's residents, misinformed of the risk, were unprepared.

This play narrates the day of the typhoon from multiple perspectives, while investigating the historical, cultural, and political context underpinning the incident.  The characters come from different cultures and different social classes, and they speak different languages, but their destinies are linked by the storm.  The typhoon may destroy the city, but it also may allow for the city to be rebuilt.
