2020 Marquis Award Recipient, Cecil Slaughter, Professor of Practice in Dance

The 2020 Marquis Award recognizes dance educators in the St. Louis area who show innovation in their dance teaching careers.

The 2020 honorees were celebrated at Beat Ballads on Friday, January 24, 2020 at The Grandel!  The awards are presented by The Big Muddy Dance Company.  They honor dance educators in the greater St. Louis area that have shown longevity of passion and inspiration over the course of their teaching careers.  Students, parents and fellow teachers nominate dance educators who they feel have made a significant impact on their dance students and in the St. Louis dance community throughout their career.

Slaughter has been an integral part of the Washington University Performing Arts department since 2000.  He currently teaches the Lester Horton Modern Dance Technique. He served as the artistic Director for The Slaughter Project from 2004 to 2015 after which he became the artistic director for WUDance Collective, the Performing Arts Department’s resident dance company.  WUDC is comprised of elite student dancers who also serve as choreographers for many of the collective’s performances which can be seen both on campus and throughout the St. Louis area.

Recently WUDance Collective was chosen to perform as the “Honorary Dance Company” for the 2020 National Dance Week which will take place April 25, 2020 at Grand Center in St. Louis.
