Julia Walker, Chair of the Performing Arts Department, served as "emcee" for Upstream Theatre's first annual Translation Slam on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, held in conjunction with the theatre's production of Calderon de la Barca's 1636 play La Vida es Sueño (Life is a Dream). Featuring students from two area high schools—MICDS and Ladue Horton Watkins High School—the "Slam" was less a competition than a conversation, with professional translator Gary Racz contributing his expertise.
It concluded with a sneak peek of Upstream's production when actor Reginald Pierre performed Segismund's famous monologue—the source text under consideration. The students thus got to hear the meanings they had discovered in the original Spanish text come to life in the English of Gary's verse translation.
